Yeah, they're quite a couple! Sankara and Leonard work 4 km from Ouaga. They arrived at my hostel where we were supposed to meet, perfectly on time.
Gundara now also produces leather bags and other items in Burkina Faso.
Gundara is living fair principles.
Our production process is transparent. We connect our clients to our producers as much as possible.
Fair trade has various definitions and degrees around the world. With Gundara a high percentage (about one third) of the sales price of the leather bags goes directly back to the producers in Kabul, Afghanistan.
To make this even more transparent, we now introduced our “fairness level” indicator, showing for each product what percentage goes back to the producers or the country of origin in general.
Ordering patus (plaids/ woolen blankets) from Afghanistan or Pakistan is not always easy. Two models of our patus (woolen blankets) were shown in the German journal "Kontinente" in January 2012. Therefore the demand for patus rose quickly and surprisingly high. Particularly elderly women from southwestern Germany seemed to be interested in our warm woolen blankets. We were quickly sold out and had about hundred pieces pre-ordered.
Patus are hand-woven wool plaids or light blankets, in our case, from Swat valley in Western Pakistan. In South Asia (Afghanistan and Pakistan or North India) patus are the alternative to a winter jacket.
At the Fair Camp there will be workshops, a market place and networking activities taking place.
Gundara will offer a workshop at 1.10 p.m. on its experiences as a social enterprise. There will be an introductory presentation of what Gundara has achieved so far, followed by a discussion and working groups on the topic. The results from the workshop will later be presented in the plenary session.
